Why this category is different

The hardest part isn't wanting it. It's knowing which one.

Beauty buyers rarely abandon because they don’t want the product — they abandon because they can’t work out whether it’s right for them. Shade, skin type, sensitivity, and where it fits in an existing routine are all unresolved questions, and every one of them is a reason to leave and think about it.

Where the money goes

Where beauty stores leak.

Four patterns that recur across skincare and cosmetics stores.

No help choosing the right one

Shade, skin type, and concern matching left to the customer's judgement. Uncertainty here converts into an abandoned session, not a support ticket.

Routine confusion

Which product first, how often, and what it can be used alongside. Without that, buyers default to a single cautious purchase instead of a routine.

Ingredient claims that don't land

Actives listed without concentration, purpose, or sensitivity guidance — in a category where buyers increasingly read like chemists.

No route back for the refill

Replenishment is where the margin is, but most stores treat the repeat buyer exactly like a first-time visitor.

How these buyers decide

They're matching, not just shopping.

The buying process is a series of eliminations, and each unanswered question ends it.

FAQ

Beauty & skincare questions.

Not always — a quiz is one way to solve selection anxiety, but it’s not the only one, and a badly built quiz adds a step without removing doubt. Sometimes better filtering, clearer suitability language, and honest comparison do the same job with less friction. The teardown will show which your store needs.

Photography sells desire, but it rarely resolves suitability. Most beauty stores we look at have excellent imagery and still lose people at the moment they ask “is this right for my skin?” — that question needs words, structure, and evidence, not another image.

A lot, and it’s usually the underworked half. Acquisition gets the attention while the refill journey gets none, even though replenishment is where the profit sits in this category.
